Architectural Review
This house on the edge of the Great Karoo desert is a thoughtful response to place, climate and the cosmos. It’s a retreat devised for immersion in the desert landscape and for enjoying clear views of the night sky. Different spaces are orientated towards peaks of the neighbouring mountains, and openings capture cooling breezes and frame views of the earth and heavens. Structured on an east-west axis around two courtyards, the house’s zigzag plan suggests flexibility – it can grow over time as the needs of the occupants change.
