We have been engaged to work with a north London primary school to consolidate an existing school, currently split across two sites, onto a single site to facilitate their operations and strategy. In addition to analysing the needs of the school, and creating a new timber framed and clad nursery building to accommodate two and three year olds, we are also working with Engineers HRW And OR Consulting to design a facade screening system to mitigate overheating on the long south-facing facade.
The project is a fascinating one, in which climate change is impacting the thermal performance of many buildings from the post-war building period. It shows how it is possible, at minimal cost, to create solar shading which will have a meaningful impact on classroom temperatures and student comfort, while also giving this special school a unique identity.
