We very much enjoyed attending the WISH (Women in Social Housing) London ‘NetWalk – History of Social Housing’ in Islington. 

Led by Tour Guide and Historian, Jane Parker, the unique tour took in a rich cross-section of estates across the London Borough of Islington, from impressive Victorian, Edwardian and pre-WWII homes shaped by pioneering philanthropists and independent housing trusts, through to early London County Council developments and more recent schemes by the borough. Along the way, we uncovered the stories behind the people and ideas that helped shape these places, and how thoughtful design has contributed to pride, identity and well-being in communities over time.

At Openstudio this made us think about how incredible it is that housing of this period is still used and loved. The oldest Peabody Estate still managed by the charity was built in 1865 and still provides wonderful housing in the heart of London. The attention to detail, incorporation of a landscaped courtyard/playspace, use of materials which have longevity and give identity to place aligns with the values we have about designing housing today. All the care that went into this housing in the nineteenth century is still evident in the community it supports today.
