Swartberg House Animation

The Swartberg House in the Great Karoo modulates the extreme heat and cold of a desert climate by using the fabric of the building to control internal temperature. Moving architectural elements – timber shutters and large double-glazed sliding doors – open, screen and close the house at different times of year. This short animation explains how these elements are employed in summer and winter to thermally regulate the building and to engage the house and its inhabitants with the changing seasons.
