We’re excited to share a major update on our upcoming project, published in Northern Housing.

“Work has begun on 16 new homes in Sunderland city centre, based on developer igloo’s Home of 2030 concept.

The scheme was created in collaboration with Mawson Kerr Architects and Openstudio Architects, which jointly won the national design competition established by RIBA and the government.

The project is part-funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) and Sunderland City Council. It forms part of the regeneration of the Vaux neighbourhood and the wider Riverside Sunderland masterplan.

The scheme also includes a further 18 townhouses, due to complete in early 2027. Practical completion of the Homes of 2030 development is anticipated in autumn 2027, with the finished scheme offering a mix of two- and three-bedroom terraced houses, maisonettes and apartments.

The Home of 2030 competition sought to explore the future of housing delivery, encouraging designs that prioritised uniqueness, community and climate-friendly construction. Igloo and MawsonKerr’s winning entry is centred on low-impact materials, precision-led off-site construction and high-performance energy systems.
