Lightbox House
We set two massive frameless sloping skylights into a green roof, to connect the building to the sky and the changing light patterns in the garden. The deep structure of the skylights stretches the space of the building vertically upwards, while the glazed doors open it horizontally to the garden.
The green roof acts to insulate the space thermally, and forms a visual bridge between the garden and the existing building. The new space is therefore a hybrid one, which is conceived of as a space between garden and building, between light and shade and enclosure and exposure.
