Our clients wanted to create a very specific sense of place in a neglected Grade II Listed building; one in which subtlety and nuances were celebrated. Rather than attention-grabbing design, this project focuses on invisibly mending the building, restoring materials removed over the decades, and introducing a sense of space and calm. We helped our clients navigate the demands of the local council and achieve Listed Building Consent.
On the upper floor levels the original spaces were reinstated, and a series of delicate colours, textures and elements were introduced. On the lower ground level the interventions were more intensive, including the addition of a waving plastered ceiling, which modulates the light and elevates the previously oppressive space into an integral part of the building. We reused excess material from another project to create the textured reclaimed brick floor, which extends into the external lowered garden area.
Colour consultant Camilla Schutzmann Steuch advised on the colours for the interior. The textures and palette of materials were developed in close collaboration with the clients. The result is a building which emphasizes the integrity of experience – a place in which the rituals of everyday life are celebrated and enhanced.
