Infocube

Urban Splash, 2008


Openstudio entered the competition run by Urban Splash in conjunction with the Architects' Journal. The brief was to design an 'Infobox' which will stand on the city-centre site for eight years, with the possibility of becoming a permanent fixture. Our 'Infocube' was a close rival to the final winner, which was also a three storey cube.

Apartment Therapy, 2007


Smallest Coolest Apartment 2007 - winner for 'Le Cabinet'.
This was an online competition run by the website Apartment Therapy looking at small apartments and homes all over the world less than 60 square metres in size. Judging criteria looked at the efficient and innovative use of a small space, aesthetics as well as creative problem solving. Our project was the unanimous winner.

Architecture After Apartheid: Shaping the Rainbow Nation

RIBA, 2007

Jennifer Beningfield was part of a discussion panel to accompany an exhibition on South African architecture at the RIBA, linked to the publication of a special issue of the Architectural Review.
The exhibition 'Between Ownership and Belonging', investigated post-apartheid design and practice, from new public spaces to private homes.

The Frightened Land book launch

Routledge, 2006

Routledge sponsored a gathering to celebrate the publication of Jennifer Beningfield's ground-breaking work on the South African landscape and architecture.
Albie Sachs, who wrote the foreword to the book , introduced it at South Africa's Constitutional Court.

The conference was held at Oxford University and brought together leading architects and researchers from the UK and abroad.

Jennifer Beningfield was invited to be the opening speaker on the meaning of landscape at this conference at one of South Africa's leading universities.
She was also a judge of work for the Des Baker Award at the same event.
